Research

ubc materials faculty holding 3d printed materials

Research is a core strength of the Department.  In fact, MTRL has the highest research funding per faculty member of any UBC Engineering department.  Materials is a rapidly changing field and MTRL faculty are taking a leading role in a number of development areas – from extractive metallurgy to lightweight materials, electronic materials and biomaterials.

There are over 90 graduate students, a ratio of 2:1 undergraduates to graduates.  UBC Materials Engineering attracts graduate students from across Canada and around the globe as a centre of excellence in a number of Materials research fields.

All this provides a rich learning environment for students and opportunities for those who want to experience research projects first hand, even as an undergraduate.

The diagram below shows the main fields of research within the Department. For more details please visit research groups.
