Message from the Head

Welcome to the Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia. I invite you to explore our website and discover how we are working to make a difference through our research, our teaching and our community. With a proud history of achievements since 1915, we also look to the future and our continuing role as a leading innovator in Materials Engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels and as a valuable partner to industry around the world.

Materials Engineering has an important and exciting role in current and emerging technologies that make our world what it is today and will help shape the future. Materials engineers have a unique contribution to make to all areas of engineering through materials expertise including developing new materials and improving existing ones, how they are made and disposed of.

In our research, we work closely with industry partners internationally. We have faculty with world-renowned expertise in hydrometallurgy, composite materials, nanomaterials, biomaterials and ceramics. Recent research developments in the department are helping to reduce environmental impact in the mining industry and enabling new possibilities in medical treatments. We are partners in the NSERC Strategic Network on Holistic Innovation in Additive Manufacturing that seeks to develop innovative solutions to enhance metal Additive Manufacturing. We also have a leading role in the Composite Research and Composite Knowledge Networks, which aim to translate research and knowledge into practice for composites manufacturing.

We have a long history of providing excellence in education and offer one of the top-rated materials programs in North America. Graduates of our program are enjoying rewarding careers locally and internationally in a wide range of industries from mining to advanced electronics, healthcare and aerospace.

Our friendly community within the department and beyond provides support and inspiration. We have 21 faculty, 215 undergraduates, 90 graduate students, 40 staff and many alumni who stay in touch, socially and professionally.

I am excited about our department and its future and honoured to be part of the team. I hope that I may have opportunity to welcome you in person in the future.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Daan Maijer
