Matthias Militzer, a professor of materials engineering, will lead an inter-university team to develop a new, interface-based approach for designing advanced next-generation high-strength steels that will enable the manufacture of lightweight cars. He is one of only five UBC Engineering professors to receive this NSERC grant. The project will also involve researchers from McGill and McMaster and three leading Canadian steel producers (ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Stelco, and Evraz Inc NA) and will help Canada reach its average fuel efficiency target for 2025.
