Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) or Master of Science (M.Sc.)
We have two research-based Masters programs which admit students to study with us. These combine state-of-the-art research within one of our Research Teams and taking courses at UBC. To complete these degrees, you must complete 18 credits of coursework, at least 12 of which must be at the graduate level, and a research thesis. These degrees should normally take 18 to 24 months to complete.
Admission to these programs typically requires you to identify a suitable supervisor for your thesis-based research project, together with the eligibility requirements (see below for more details).
Students are typically encouraged to apply for the Masters of Applied Science (MASc), which is especially appropriate for students with a BASc in Engineering, or equivalent. The Masters of Science (MSc) is especially appropriate for students with a BSc in Science, or equivalent. Please see the eligibility requirements below.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
Students can also train with use and undertake study as part of our Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program. This is a thesis-based research program where you will be working directly with one (or more) of our research teams. The PhD is a longer program, normally take 36 to 48 months to complete, and we typically admit students who have already completed their Masters degree (or are in the process of completing it prior to starting the PhD). The PhD journey includes milestones and assessments which are there to support your training, and these includes a comprehensive exam and proposal defense. If appropriate, students may elect to audit courses or be asked to take courses for credit based upon their prior background and the nature of the intended research project. A student’s selection of courses will be made in consultation with the student’s supervisory committee.
Admission to this program typically requires you to identify a suitable supervisor for your thesis-based research project, together with the eligibility requirements (see below for more details).
Specializations
The department offers opportunities for study in the fields of biomaterials; additive manufacturing, casting and solidification of metals; ceramic processes and properties; corrosion and electrochemistry; composite material processing and properties; hydrometallurgy and electrorefining; materials characterization; physical metallurgy; and thermomechanical processing and environmental processing.
Please consult the Faculty Directory to search for Research Professors and their specific research interests.
