Pursuing graduate studies is a significant commitment, both personally and financially. We are dedicated to making your educational journey as accessible as possible. All admitted graduate students in our program are funded through a combination of sources such as graduate research assistantship (GRA), scholarships, sponsorship, and/or other awards. Many also pursue teaching assistantship (TA) opportunities to supplement their income and gain valuable experience.
Funding
Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA): Supervisors provide minimum stipends to graduate students without external funding, contingent upon satisfactory academic performance. Beyond the nominal program duration, the supervisors determine stipends. The standard funding periods and amounts in our department as of June 1, 2024 are:
- MASc/MSc: 2 years at $26,000 minimum per year
- PhD: 4 years at $30,000 minimum per year
Awards
UBC, the provincial government, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) offer a variety of scholarships. We strongly encourage students to apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible, as these often serve as top-ups to their GRA funding. For a complete list of awards available, please visit the G+PS Awards Portal.
UBC Scholarships
Outstanding incoming students are automatically considered for the following UBC awards.
Please note that in some cases, continuing students may also be eligible.
Affiliated Fellowships
UBC has a number of central fellowships that range in values between $175 and $40,000. Please consult the UBC awards database, as well as their webpages on the Affiliated Fellowships Doctoral Program and Affiliated Fellowships Master’s Program.
BPOC Graduate Excellence Award
Awards have been made available by the University of British Columbia for outstanding graduate students who identify as Black or as a Person of Color, with preference for domestic students and for incoming research Master’s students. The minimum value of each award is $1,500.
Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF)
The fellowship provides $18,200 per year plus full tuition for up to 4 years, with supervisors offering an additional top-up of GRA to ensure the minimum funding package is met. PhD students are considered within the first 12 months of their program, and those transferring from MASc to PhD are considered within the first-year post-transfer.
Graduate Student Initiative (GSI)
The GSI funds provide tuition fee awards to eligible graduate students in both the PhD and Master’s programs. A student is eligible if they do not hold a fellowship or industrial sponsorship that either includes tuition fee coverage or exceeds $15,000 per year (in which case the supervisor must provide top-ups to meet the departmental minimum, including the tuition fee award).
- For PhD students, the tuition award is provided for the first two years and extended to years 3 and 4 if the student advances to candidacy within 25 months of starting the program.
- For Master’s students, the award is provided for the first year and renewed for the second year if the student completes 12 credits of coursework with a minimum average of 76%.
The award amount is the same for all eligible students but may vary annually based on available GSI funding and the number of qualifying students. Typically, the award is approximately $2,000. For current students, this internally can be listed as an APSC award.
International Tuition Award (ITA)
International Tuition Award provides international graduate students up to $3,200/ year with their tuition fees if they are registered full-time in research-based master’s and doctoral programs and if they meet the other eligibility requirements stated on the award page.
President’s Academic Excellence Initiative PhD Award (PAEPI)
This award recognizes the contributions of PhD students to the university’s research activities. It is open to all new and continuing PhD students. Award values range from $500 to $1,500, depending on the student’s status and year of study.
