Joint Student Chapter

The MTRL Joint Student Chapter (formerly known as MMAT Joint Student Chapter) of UBC was founded in 1995. At the time, there were not many student chapters in Canada, and UBC’s was unique as it offered joint student membership in the largest Canadian professional society related to materials (Canadian Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum: CIM) as well as the largest American Society (The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society: TMS). This led the way towards developing joint student chapters across Canada with many of the professional organizations.

When it began, the UBC Joint Chapter was relatively small, having only 15 student members. The Chapter successfully gained momentum and began to grow, attracting new student members and expanding the number of professional organizations that it represented. Today, after winning many awards of excellence, the Chapter has grown to include five different professional organizations related to metals and materials engineering and now attracts over 90% of the undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Materials Engineering at UBC. The Chapter is an invaluable part of the department of Materials Engineering at UBC, and it provides a wonderful linkage to interact with the many professional societies in our field.
