Field trips

For one week each year, our 3rd-year and 4th-year classes leave the classroom for a field trip to see materials engineering in practice. This is a valuable opportunity for students to see materials in industry and gain a deeper understanding of the commercialization, production and application of a wide range of materials.

This year, the 3rd-years travelled to south western Ontario, while the 4th-years visited Washington State and Oregon.

Second-year students also have opportunity for local field trips, such as a recent visit to see airplane servicing at Vancouver International Airport.  This was an extraordinary opportunity to look inside a partially “worn” large airplane during servicing and discuss the materials engineering implications.

Over 90% of alumni said that the field trips, design projects, group work and labs offered important preparation for their career.
