Key Points

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Must have an OVERALL (Years 1 to current) GPA of 68%
  • Must have completed at least one year of your BASc degree.
  • If you are graduating in May 2024 you ARE still eligible to apply.

Pay scales

The department pay scale is $11,920 for a 16-week appointment period for all year levels.

Application Process for MANU students: Please submit a PDF copy of the NSERC application (both Part I and Part II), a copy of your transcript, and your CV/resume to Lydia Lyu by 4pm Friday March 1 2024.  

International Students – Work Learn International Undergraduate Research Award

Designed for International Undergraduate students who are interested in research, the Work Learn International Undergraduate Research Awards subsidizes professors to hire students to work on their research projects. The program provides students with workplace experience through undergraduate research opportunities, particularly for students interested in research as a career. Students will hold the awards preferably during the summer term for roughly full-time work.

  • These awards have a value of $6,000. This amount will be reimbursed to your project supervisor’s account. Supervisors are required to pay a minimum wage over 16 weeks (inclusive of 4% vacation pay), as well as benefits (CPP, EI, WCB) amounting to approximately 7.48%.   • Awards will be allocated to the Faculty of Applied Science based on the current enrollment numbers of undergraduate international students.
  • Students must have a B- 68% cumulative GPA and have completed a minimum of first year or two terms.
  • Apply directly through UBC CareersOnline, not to the department as the domestic NSERC USRA students do.
  • Any Faculty of Applied Science, Engineering faculty member with funding can agree to be the research supervisor.
  • Deadline for Summer 2024 awards: February 6, 2024.
