Materials engineering has always been crucial to the economic success of any country but this is particularly true in a resource dependent country such as Canada. Examining the recent Forbes list of the largest 40 companies in Canada, more than half of them are regular employers of materials engineers. Moreover, five of the 40 companies are listed as belonging to the "materials industry". In addition to this list are all of the companies that operate in Canada as subsidiaries of larger companies.
The Canadian Government has identified the materials sector as a strategic sector of importance for the country and has listed specific materials engineering related milestones within its Innovation Strategy.
